OpenAI introduces GPT-5.4 with more knowledge-work capability is currently attracting attention in the technology world.
Experts believe this development may influence how digital platforms evolve
over the coming years.

The topic has already sparked discussions among developers, analysts,
and industry observers who are closely monitoring how the situation unfolds.

Updates come amid user blowback over the company’s Pentagon deal.

In keeping with its recently accelerated release cadence, OpenAI has shipped GPT-5.4 (including GPT-5.4 Thinking and GPT-5.4 Pro).

This update comes at a critical time, as recent events have led some vocal users to abandon ship for competing products and models from Anthropic and Google.

GPT-5.4 is another model update focused on usefulness for agentic tasks, particularly knowledge work. OpenAI says this is its first model explicitly aimed at computer-use tasks; like competing models, it can issue keyboard or mouse inputs based on periodic desktop or application screenshots.

When prompted within ChatGPT, the GPT-5.4 Thinking model will present more of its reasoning up front and can accept prompts to change course in the middle of its reasoning process, OpenAI says. It’s said to improve context maintenance for long, so-called reasoning stretches. That makes it more useful for long-horizon tasks and web research.

Also helpful for long-horizon tasks is improved token efficiency—as is often the case with these new model releases, efficiency improvements allow it to do more before users hit limits. On the API side, the context window has been increased to 1 million tokens, competing with offerings from Google and Anthropic.

Additionally, there are improvements to visual understanding; it can now more carefully analyze images up to 10.24 million pixels, or up to a 6,000-pixel maximum dimension. OpenAI also claims responses from this model are 18 percent less likely to contain factual errors than before.

ChatGPT reportedly lost some users to competitor Anthropic in recent days, after OpenAI announced a deal with the Pentagon in the wake of a public feud between the Trump administration and Anthropic over limitations Anthropic wanted to impose on military applications of its models. However, it’s unclear just how many folks jumped ship or whether that led to a substantial dip in the product’s massive base of over 900 million users.

To take advantage of the situation, Anthropic rolled out the once-subscriber-only memory feature to free users and introduced a tool for importing memory from elsewhere. Anthropic says March 2 was its largest single day ever for new sign-ups.

OpenAI needs to compete in both capability and cost and token efficiency to maintain its relative popularity with users, and this update aims to support that objective.

GPT-5.4 is available to users of the ChatGPT web and native apps, Codex, and the API starting today. Subscribers to Plus, Team, and Pro are also getting GPT-5.4 Thinking, and GPT-5.4 Pro is hitting the API, Edu, and Enterprise.

OpenAI has unveiled GPT-5.4, the latest upgrade to its flagship AI model, designed to handle complex knowledge-work tasks more effectively. The new version focuses on improving reasoning, research assistance, and professional productivity across a wide range of fields.

According to early details, GPT-5.4 brings major improvements in analysis, problem solving, and long-form content generation. The model is designed to better understand complex instructions, manage large amounts of information, and provide more structured responses when dealing with technical or business-related topics.

One of the key goals behind GPT-5.4 is to support professionals who rely on AI for knowledge-intensive work, including researchers, analysts, developers, marketers, and writers. The model reportedly performs better when summarizing documents, analyzing datasets, drafting reports, and assisting with coding tasks.

Another improvement is the model’s ability to maintain context across longer conversations and documents. This allows GPT-5.4 to work more efficiently on projects that involve multi-step reasoning or large volumes of information, such as research reports, software documentation, or legal analysis.

OpenAI has also focused on improving accuracy and reliability. The company says GPT-5.4 produces fewer hallucinations and is better at identifying uncertain information, which is crucial for professional environments where precision matters.

Developers and businesses are expected to gain access to GPT-5.4 through OpenAI’s APIs and enterprise tools. The model is likely to be integrated into productivity platforms, coding assistants, and research tools across industries.

The release comes as competition in the AI sector continues to intensify, with major technology companies racing to build more powerful and capable models. By focusing on knowledge work and professional use cases, OpenAI is positioning GPT-5.4 as a tool designed not just for conversation, but for serious productivity and decision-making tasks.

As AI systems become increasingly capable, updates like GPT-5.4 signal a broader shift toward AI acting as a collaborative partner in professional work, helping people analyze information, generate ideas, and complete complex tasks faster than ever before.
