It can be nice to take a day and just stay home, vegging out and enjoying the comforts of domesticity. But what if you had no other choice? That’s the premise of an unsettling new sci-fi thriller from director Louis Leterrier, the man who “birthed” the Marvel Cinematic Universe with The Incredible Hulk back in 2008. He also directed Fast X, Now You See Me, and the first two Transporter movies, so he knows his way around a franchise.
The Last House is a refreshingly original idea. It’s about a family of four who wake up one day to find that they are unable to leave their house. It’s not clear why. As you can see in the trailer below, things start innocently enough, with the family supporting each other and dancing to while away the hours. They discover that, apparently, everyone in the world is also stuck inside. But by the time they reach “Day 1,183,” their whole lives have changed. The outside world is overgrown and there are bears wandering the streets.
Obviously, there’s some kind of mysterious force at work here, but we’ll have to wait a while before finding out what it is. Watch the trailer for The Last House below:
The trailer looks unnerving. It’s easy for people to imagine how strange and scary it would be if you were trapped in your own home, especially with COVID-era lockdowns still fresh in the memory. Film nerds might be reminded of The Exterminating Angel, the 1962 film by surrealist director Luis Buñuel about a group of people who arrive for a party only to discover that they can’t leave.
The cast of The Last House is small but mighty. Greta Lee, who plays mother Riley, starred in the A24 film Past Lives, which was nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards in 2024. Wagner Moura, who was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor in 2026 for his role in the movie The Secret Agent, plays father Jason. Moura has worked with Netflix before, famously playing Pablo Escobar in the drama Narcos. Riley Chung and Noah Alexander Sosnowski play the couple’s children. Other cast members include Emma Ho, Gabriel Barbosa, and Sam Lerner, suggesting that we’ll check in with at least a few other characters outside of the main family sooner or later.
